The Cohill Foundation uses artistic methods to help youth communicate when words fail, enhance mental health, and help heal from traumatic experiences.
Visual Arts
Focuses on art such as screen printing, painting, murals, photography, also graphic design; an examination of visual art from various cultures. It includes a study of materials, techniques, principals, subjects, styles, issues, functions, and meanings related to visual art. We use creative techniques to help youth express themselves artistically and examine their psychological and emotional undertones in their art. |
Literacy Arts
Focuses on spoken word, poetry, lyricism, and creative writing to create a safe space for youth to express their feelings and emotions. Our self-expression program uses Literacy Arts as a teaching mechanism to create spaces for youth to express themselves freely, and unapologetically. This serves as a way for their voice to be heard, and to express how their feeling versus suppressing those emotions. |
Music
Focuses on the process of composing and producing different music. It addresses the principles of recording sound and explains sound characteristics. Basic acoustics as well as proper audio recording techniques for field and studio recording. We use Music Therapy to help youth reduce stress, improve their moods, and self-expression. |
Dance
Students learn various forms of dance including hip-hop and modern; we incorporate the contributions each style has made to the performing arts and the development of our culture. We use dance DMT (Dance Movement Therapy) to help youth achieve emotional, cognitive, physical, and social integration. |
Yoga
Combines the skills of counseling, meditation, and yoga to fit individual needs. Yoga focuses on the healing and balance of physical as well as mental health through talk therapy, asanas (postures), and opening of the body. Yoga helps with ADD/ADHD, trauma recovery/PTSD, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, anger management, crisis intervention, grief counseling, and more. We use yoga postures, breathing exercises, meditation, and guided imagery to improve our youth mental and physical health. |
